Manuka Honey

Where does Manuka Honey come from?

Manuka is unlike any other honey, and there are a few types of honey buzzing around out there. Manuka specifically comes from the special bees that pollinate the Manuka Bush, otherwise known as (Leptospermum scoparium).

These predominantly grow in New Zealand, but they are also found in Australia too. Whilst there are several types of Manuka bushes that grow around the world, for some strange reason, they don’t produce the flowers needed to create Manuka, like in Oceania.

Interestingly, the word ‘Manuka’ itself, originates from the native language of New Zealand, Maori. Maori culture is steeped in history, myths, legends, and like most civilisations, traditional medicinal practices. Manuka is a big part of this!

Manuka bushes have been used for generations by the Maori, and they are known to have made use of its oil, sap, leaves, and bark. Often boiled and used as a painkiller, antiseptic, and in some cases, a sedative, the use of Manuka has been part of Maori culture for generations.

There are several unusual kinds of honey to be found across the world, but Manuka is one of the few that only grows in specific locations. For this reason, this makes Manuka one of the most desirable kinds of honey available!
